JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The University of Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s track & field teams recorded a memorable day Thursday to kick off competition at the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Championship at the University of North Florida, as six of seven Fighting Irish competitors remained in contention in their respective events.

Junior Molly Seidel continued to build upon her fantastic track season to win the 10,000 meters, easily ensuring her spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, held June 10-13. Seidel, who finished second in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championships, outran her second- and third-place competition by nine seconds.

Senior Emily Morris punched her ticket to Eugene in the shot put, registering a season-best toss of 15.83 meters and finishing 12th to take the final spot at the national meet.

Junior Margaret Bamgbose and senior Amber Lalla each moved on to Friday’s quarterfinals in the 400 meters, in which the top three in each heat plus the next six best times advance. Bamgbose (52.13) finished at the top of her heat and fourth overall to make the next round, while Lalla (53.24) turned in a personal best to take third in her heat and 19th overall. The quarterfinal gun will start at 6 p.m. EDT Friday.

Junior Danielle Aragon also made it to the quarterfinal in the 1,500 meters, in which the top five in each heat, plus the next four best times advance. Aragon (4:25.33) finished fourth in her heat and 26th overall. She will compete again in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Just two Irish men competed Thursday with one moving on in the competition.

Senior Chris Giesting finished fifth overall in the first round of 400 meter competition and first in his heat to make Friday’s quarterfinal with a time of 46.07 seconds.

Senior Jake Kildoo’s season came to an after a 32nd-place finish (31:07:45) in the 10,000 meters.

Action will resume at noon EDT Friday with the women’s discus and men’s javelin throw (in which freshman Greg Bombara will compete), and running events will begin at 5 p.m. EDT with the first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles (in which senior standout Jade Barber will compete). The hurdles will be followed by the quarterfinals for both women’s and men’s 400 meters (Bamgbose, Lalla, Giesting). Parker English (200 meters) Nathan Richartz (pole vault) and Dominick Padovano (discus) will also compete Friday.
