WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads wrapped up this weekend’s competition on a strong note Saturday as Notre Dame earned 23 top-five finishes at Purdue’s Mike Poehlein Invitational.
The Irish also brought home four first-place performances as Eric Quick took top honors in the men’s triple jump, Theresa Cattuna won the women’s 5,000 meters, Joanna Schultz claimed the top prize in the women’s 400 meters and Johnathan Shawel won the men’s 800-meter run.
Next up for Notre Dame is the Louisville Invitational April 10 in Louisville, Ky.

Women’s Shot Put: Jaclyn Espinoza finished seventh with a mark of 13.69m (44-11), followed by Rudy Atang in eighth at 13.62m (44-08 1/4) and Madeline Casanova in 14th at 11.49m (37-8 1/2). Illinois’ Aja Evans won the event with a toss of 16.89m (55-05).
Men’s Shot Put: Andrew Hills finished sixth at 16.58m (54-04 3/4), followed by John Belcher in eighth at 16.12m (52-10 3/4) and Anthony Thomas in 19th with a mark of 13.48m (44-02 3/4). Louisville’s Steve Hnat was the top thrower at 18.56m (60-10 3/4).
Men’s Pole Vault: Andrew Kolbeck finished 10th with a height of 4.45m (14-07 1/4), while Benigno Sandoval finished 12th at 4.30m (14-01 1/4). Purdue’s Eric Sparks on the event at 5.20m (17-00 3/4).
Women’s Pole Vault: Former Irish All-American Mary Saxer, competing unattached, was the top vaulter with a mark of 4.17m (13-08 1/4). Chrissy Finkel tied for sixth with Rikki Lynn London at 3.42m (11-02 1/2). Jessica Sullivan recorded a vault of 3.12m (10-02 3/4) to finish 15th.
Women’s Long Jump: Jasmine Williams finished eighth at 5.19m (17-00 1/2), followed by Lauren Leniart in 12th at 5.08m (16-08). Purdue’s Christina Madison recorded to top jump of 5.92m (19-05 3/4).
Women’s High Jump: Kendra Jennings finished fourth at 1.66m (5-05 1/4). Purdue’s Emily Breslin was the top jumper at 1.76m (5-09 1/4).
Men’s High Jump: Doug Onuscheck finished third at 1.90m (6-02 3/4), just behind Purdue’s Lance Moe in first at 2.06m (6-08 3/4).
Women’s Discus: Jaclyn Espinoza finished fourth at 46.80m (153-06), while Madeline Casanova finished 13th at 37.14m (121-10). Louisville’s Jere’ Summers won the event at 53.26m (174-09).
Men’s Discus: Anthony Thomas finished seventh at 46.34m (152-00), just ahead of David Anderson in eighth at 44.97m (147-06). John Bowman, competing unattached, won the event at 57.76m (189-06).
Women’s Triple Jump: Purdue Nkeiru Ugwoaba was the top jumper at 12.57m (41-03), while Jasmine Williams finished fifth at 11.35m (37-03).
Men’s Triple Jump: Eric Quick won the event at 15.12m (49-07 1/4). Connor Paladino finished ninth at 13.16m (43-02 1/4), and Patrick Glass was 10th at 13.01m (42-08 1/4).
Women’s 5000m: Theresa Cattuna clocked in at 17:11.11 to finish first, followed by Susanna Sullivan in third at 17:48.76, Molly Hirt in fifth at 18:10.32, Elizabeth Barron in seventh at 18:15.67 and Kari Johnson in ninth with a time of 18:23.53.
Men’s 5000m: Mat Abernethy finished seventh in 15:13.83, while Purdue’s Caden Shields won the event in 14:30.47.
Women’s 1500m: Abby Higgins finished 12th in 4:50.96, Rachel Boggs was 24th in 5:03.47 and Grace Brier was 29th in 5:09.03. Purdue’s Nan Hammel finished first in 4:38.88.
Men’s 1500m: Greg Kiley finished fourth in 3:55.52, followed by Spencer Carter in 10th at 4:00.72, Kelly Lynch in 11th at 4:01.09 and Trent Sayers in 14th at 4:09.33. Purdue’s Simon Rogers won the event in 3:52.49.
Women’s 100m Hurdles: Illinois’ Tamika Robinson finished first in 13.56, just head of Nevada Sorenson in second at 13.97 and Kali Watkins in third at 14.01. Sasha Blanchard finished 11th in 15.62.
Women’s 400m: Joanna Schultz won the event with a time of 54.10. Samantha Williams finished 10th in 58.84.
Men’s 400m: Larry Inanga, competing unattached, finished first in 48.81. Edward Hitchler was fifth in 49.31, Brendan Dougherty finished 10th in 50.07 and Alex Korenstra finished 11th in 50.39. Dean Odegard finished 20th in 51.82, Ronnie Kadykowski clocked in at 51.94 to finished 21st and Alex Bavis finished 26th in 52.89.
Women’s 100m: Illinois’ Tamika Robinson finished first in 11.74, while Nevada Sorenson finished ninth in 12.36, Tiffany Tibbot finished 12th in 12.50 and Kali Watkins finished 18th in 12.79.
Men’s 100m: Sean Lindbloom finished 23th in 11.50, and Chandler Brooks finished 27th in 11.56. Indianapolis’ Frederick Helm won the event in 10.72.
Women’s 800m: Purdue’s Rachel Stalzer finished first in 2:15.31, followed by Allison Schroeder in second at 2:15.96, Natalie Johnson in fifth at 2:17.81 and Angela Ryck in ninth in 2:20.35.
Men’s 800m: Johnathan Shawel clocked in at 1:53.11 to finish first, followed by Mitch Lorenz in fourth at 1:55.11 and Jordan Carlson in seventh at 1:55.55. Trent Sayers finished 13th in 1:57.42, Zac Suriano finished 14th in 1:57.67, J.P. Mallette was 16th in 1:57.75, Brier Steenberge finished 28th in 2:00.88 and Max Cruz was 39th in 3:04.91.
Women’s 400m Hurdles: Illinois’ Latoya Griffith finished first in 1:01.50, while Sasha Blanchard finished fifth in 1:04.22 and Ericka Nowell finished seventh in 1:05.70.
Men’s 400m Hurdles: Indiana Tech’s Russell Dill was the top hurdler in 52.54. Matthew Brown finished third in 54.47.
Women’s 200m: Illinois’ Kayla Smith finished first in 24.27, while Nevada Sorenson clocked in at 25.54 to finish 12th.
Men’s 200m: Tyrell Atkins finished 27th in 23.15, Sean Lindbloom was 30th in 22.32 and Chandler Brooks finished 34th in 23.55. Larry Inanga, competing unattached, finished first in 21.4-.
Men’s 3000m Steeplechase: Purdue’s Cale Allen won the event in 9:28.14. Thomas Noel finished fourth in 9:54.76 and Kyle Higdon was seventh in 10:18.59.
Women’s 4x400m Relay: The Irish team finished fourth in 3:54.81, while Indiana Tech was the top team at 3:50.73.
Men’s 4x400m Relay: Purdue was the top team at 3:16.16, followed by the Irish A squad in second at 3:17.56. The Notre Dame B team finished seventh at 3:23.31.
