Irish Turn In Solid Day One In California And Ohio

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams racked up a total of 23 top-10 finishes, 14 top-five finishes and 12 top-three finishes at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Good Friday.

Chris Giesting (400m) Megan Yanik (400mH), and Molly Seidel (5,000m) each gathered first-place finishes on the first day.

Alexa Aragon (steeplechase), Rebecca Tracy (1,500m-section 1), Danielle Aragon (1,500m-section 4) and Patrick Feeney (400m) and Emily Morris (shot put) each finished as the runner-up in their respective events.

According to the current Track & Field Results Reporting System and the results from today’s meet, Barber holds the third fastest time in the country in the 100mH. With today’s finish in the 400m, Giesting and Feeney have the second and third best time in country in the event this outdoor season. Dougherty slides into the No. 7 spot on the national list.

Action still progresses without any official reported finishes for the Irish at the Oliver Nikoloff Open on the campus of the University of Cincinnati as the multi-event athletes near the midway point going into Saturday.

Ted Glassnow (3,239 points) currently leads in the decathlon through five of the ten events. Carly Loeffel (3,139 points) holds the top spot in the heptathlon through four of seven events.

The multi-events at the Oliver Nikoloff Open will start back up at 9 a.m. Saturday beginning with the men’s decathlon (110mH) and will conclude with the men’s decathlon (1,500m) beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Stanford Invitational will return to action Saturday at 3:10 p.m. (EST) commencing with the women’s 4x100m relay and finishing up with the men’s 4x400m relay that is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. (EST).

Oliver Nikoloff Open Results (Cincinnati) – Day One

Decathlon: Halfway through, the Irish have finished fourth or better through the five events that have been completed. Ted Glasnow currently leads the field with 3,571 points. Dean Odegard is fifth (3,239 points) and Brent Swanberg is currently in eighth (3,010 points). Glassnow secured the top spot in the 100m (11.58), shot put (14:05m) and the 400m (51.45). Swanberg extended his point margin after placing second in the shot put (11.51m) and fourth in the high jump (1.80m). Odegard increased his point total with a second-place finish in the high jump (1.89m), a third-place finish in the shot put (11.25m) and a fourth place finish in the 400m (52.34).

Heptathlon: Just over the midway point through four events, Notre Dame has had a student-athlete finish second or better in each event. Carly Loeffel is currently is first with 3,139 points while Meghan Moore sits in fifth with a total of 2,917 points. Loeffel has asserted herself as a front-runner in the multi-event contest as she place second in the shot put (11.16m), high jump (1.68m) and the 200m (25.25). Moore notably achieved a third-place finish in the 100mH (14.74) and in the 200m (25.82).

Stanford Invitational Results (Top-10) – Day One

Men:

5,000m: Competing in the event for the fourth time in his collegiate career, freshman Michael Clevenger has improved his time consistently in each and every race. Housing a previous best at 14:22.33, Clevenger once again lowered his time Friday evening to 14:21.89, placing sixth in the field of 30. Clevenger has the 10th best time in the conference, chasing close to 9th place John Murray from Georgetown by .80.

110mH: Jarrod Buchanon won his heat and placed sixth overall with a 14.86, just barley being edged out by Washington State’s Josiah Sims by .001. The finish is a new career best and the first time Buchanon has broken the 15-second mark. Buchanon advances to the finals on Saturday.

400mH: Buchanon placed fourth in his heat and overall in the field of 26 after running a time of 53.11. Aaron Dunn placed sixth in his heat and sixth overall stopping the clock at 53.64. Buchanon matches his time from last week’s meet and holds firm at the No. 3 spot on the BIG EAST’s performance list.

400m: Notre Dame dominated in the event taking three of the top five positions. Chris Giesting won the event with a winning time of 46.31 to beat out of 41 competitors in the field. Not far behind were Patrick Feeney, who placed second (46.38) and Brendan Dougherty, who placed fifth (47.64). The finish gives Giesting and Feeney the second and third best finish in country in the event this outdoor season. Dougherty slides into the No. 7 spot on the national list.

Long Jump: Keith Mesidor finished ninth with a leap of 6.78m.

5,000m: Battling back from injuries from the indoor season, senior Jeremy Rae placed ninth in the event with a time of 13:59.32. It was the first time in his career that he has ran in the event. The finish places Rae at the No. 3 spot on the BIG EAST’s performance list in the event and marks as his first official scored finish this track season in an Irish uniform. The senior last scored for the Irish during the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship this season, finishing third with a 24:39.4 8K time.

Discus: Dominick Padovano finished eighth with a distance of 47.65m.

Women:

100mH: Jade Barber, the only Irish competitor in the event, safely advances to the finals tomorrow after taking the top spot during the preliminaries with a 13.26 in the field of 37. Barber, who additionally holds the top spot in the BIG EAST, is the only student-athlete to crack the 14-second mark to date. The effort also places her at the No. 3 spot on the national list in the event.

1,500m: Rebecca Tracy placed second in her section with a time of 4:18.07. Kelly Curran took third in the third section with a 4:21.57. Danielle Aragon accomplished a second-place finish in the fourth section of the event after running a 4:20.92 while McKinzie Schulz placed 10th after crossing the line at 4:31.32. Sydni Meunier finished seventh in her section with a 4:35.34. Aragon vaults to the No. 10 spot on the BIG EAST’s performance list with the finish.

400mH: Megan Yanik won her section and took the top time overall in the field of 33 competitors with a 59.64, the only participant to break the one minute mark. Margaret Bamgbose finished third in her heat and fourth overall with a 61.37.

400m: Michelle Brown, the lone Irish competitor in the event, did not disappoint as she placed third in her heat and overall with a time of 53.99.

Steeplechase: Alexa Aragon was the runner-up in the second section of the event crossing the line at 10:10.18. The finish was the junior’s best time in her career beating her previous best by 15 seconds.

5,000m: Molly Seidel won her section with a winning time of 16:05.33, surpassing 30 competitors. After seeing action in multiple races during the cross country season; the finish marks the first track event of the season for the freshman and places her with the fifth best time in the BIG EAST to date.

Javelin: Amanda Chamblee place third with a hurl of 40.28m. The javelin specialist recorded her third best career throw and ranks third on the BIG EAST performance list to date, just .31m from second-place Casey Wagner from South Florida.

Shot Put: Emily Morris took second in the event in the field of 16 with a hurl of 14.36m.

Pole Vault: Annie Polcari placed ninth in the event after clearing a height of 3.83m, the mark is her second best vertical distance in her career.
