Notre Dame, Ind. – It was a breezy, cold day for the Notre Dame Outdoor Opener at Moose Krause Stadium, where Fighting Irish athletes won 11 meet events, highlighted by career-best efforts from Mike Schubert and Domenique Manning.
In the men’s shot put competition Schubert posted a toss of 15.76 meters (51-08.5), bettering his previous career-best throw of 14.92 meters (48-11.5) which he set at the 2005 Indy Relays. Manning cruised to victory in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.23 seconds, topping her old career mark of 14.29 that she established at the 2005 Mike Poehlein Invitational.
Other Notre Dame event winners included Laura Huarte in the javelin, Austin Wechter in the 400 meters, Matt Plaska in the 800 meters, Mike Popejoy in the 5,000 meters, Nicole Yergler in the 400-meter hurdles, Garet Koxlien in the discus, Kate Mattoon in the pole vault, and the women’s 4×400-meter relay.
Though the unfavorable conditions contributed to the team’s inability to record any NCAA regional qualifying performances, many athletes improved upon their qualifying marks for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, scheduled to be held May 5-7 in Storrs, Conn.
The Irish track and field squad will compete next weekend at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
