Irish Win Folds of Honor Collegiate

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened up the 2023 fall season with a first place finish at the Folds of Honor Collegiate at the American Dunes Golf Club on September 4-6.

“We are fortunate to play this game and I’m thankful to coach this great team,” said Director of Golf and Head Coach John Handrigan. “Each one of our players played with a lot of grit today and competed with confidence to earn this win. I’m proud of this team’s win, but I’m most proud of how our players handled themselves with class and like always, were great representatives of Notre Dame. It was special and we are going to enjoy this win as a team.”

Sitting in fifth place heading into the final round of the tournament, Notre Dame’s impressive round three lifted the Irish to the top as they were neck and neck with the Spartans up to the final hole. Notre Dame was the only program to shoot under par in round three, as they finished two under par on the day with the next program shooting nine strokes behind the Irish in the final round. The Irish finished with a team score of 860 (+8) to secure the first place finish.

Angelo Marcon led the Irish as he finished T2, shooting a 213 (E) with his best rounds coming in the first and third where he shot a 69 (-2) on each. Marcon recorded 12 birdies, five of which came in the final round today.

Jacob Modleski and Rocco Salvitti each made their freshman debuts with the Irish this week. Modleski finished T16 as he shot a 217 (+4) and recorded his best round of the tournament in round three, shooting an even 71. Salvitti shot one stroke behind Modleski, finishing T24 after shooting a 218 (+5).

While the team is excited about the tournament win, the program recognizes the importance of the Folds of Honor Foundation, the American Dunes, and the sacrifices of all who have served.

“For our team, this week was much bigger than golf,” said Director of Golf and Head Coach John Handrigan. “It was for the Folds of Honor and for all the fallen soldiers who served our country. We played for them. Every hole has a plaque on it with a fallen soldier and their family supported by Folds of Honor. We played for them.”
