Irish Women Fencers End Regular Season With 4-1 Day At Duke Open

Feb. 10, 2001

Durham, N.C. (2/10/01) – The seventh-ranked Notre Dame women’s fencing won four of five matches at Saturday’s Duke Open to finish the season with a 21-4 overall record. The lone Irish loss came to third-ranked Stanford, which returned the bulk of its dominating unit that won the 2000 NCAA women’s foil competition.

Stanford won six of nine bouts in both epee and foil while outlasting the talented Irish sabre squad, 5-4. Eight of the 27 ND-Stanford bouts were decided by one touch, with Stanford winning five of those close decisions.

“If you are fencing a team as good as Stanford, you need to fence at your best, otherwise you have no chance,” said Irish coach Yves Auriol. “We didn’t have the extra spark we needed.”

The Irish did manage to knock off10th-ranked Ohio State, 20-7, while picking up additional wins over North Carolina(20-7), Air Force(17-10) and Duke(21-6).

Notre Dame again received solid performances from its All-American epeeists, as sophomores Meagan Call (who finished 56-14 for the season, 95-23 for her career) and Anna Carnick (53-18, 94-28) each posted 12-3 records in Saturday’s action. Senior captain Kim DeMaio concluded her regular-season fencing career at Notre Dame with a 9-6 day (38-28, 95-75). Notre Dame’s three epeeists combined for a 33-12 record versus the five opponents.

The women’s foil team again was led by sophomore All-American Liza Boutsikaris who completed the day with an impressive 12-2 record (55-6, 91-15). Freshman Maggie Jordan capped off the regular-season portion of her rookie year by winning seven bouts to conclude the season at 45-17.

An 8-4 day by senior sabre captain Carianne McCullough brings her season total to 34-8 (91-24 career). The women’s sabre squad also received contributions from freshman Jessie Filkins (3-3, 28-9 for the season), sophomore All-American Natalia Mazur (10-3, 38-10, 88-13 career and freshman Destanie Milo (8-6, 41-11). The women’s sabre squad completed an impressive regular season in which it won 80 percent of its bouts (181-45, .801), with three of the top-four fencers-Mazur, Filkins and Milo-set to return in 2001-02.
