Men’s Results | Women’s Results
NEW YORK – After day one of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, the Notre Dame women sit in second place while the men are in fourth.
Day two gets underway at 8 a.m. with the completion of the men’s heptathlon. Free live streaming and live results will be provided by the conference office, with a link available on UND.com.
On the men’s side, senior pole vaulter Kevin Schipper won his third consecutive BIG EAST crown, to continue the Schipper legacy. Kevin and his older brother Matt have won the past five indoor pole vault titles.
Thirteen men advanced to Sunday’s finals, with senior Randall Babb leading the charge in the 800m run.
The women’s team qualified 10 for Sunday’s finals, highlighted by freshman Emily Frydrych qualifying first in the 1,000m run.
Senior Maddie Buttinger earned all-BIG EAST accolades in the pentathlon after finishing second with 4,008 points. The senior now has two all-BIG EAST awards in the event.

As a note to fans: In all prelims, heat winners qualify automatically for the finals even if they don’t have one of the top times.
Men’s Results
Pole Vault: Senior Kevin Schipper won his third consecutive BIG EAST Indoor Pole Vault title with a vault of 5.25m (17-02.75 ft). The Leo, Ind., product continues an impressive stat for the Schipper family, as a Schipper brother has now won the indoor pole vault crown five consecutive years. Brother Matt won the title in 2008 and 2009, before Kevin took over to claim the next three. Younger brother David, the next pole vaulting Schipper, tallied eighth place with a vault of 4.65m (15-03.00 ft).
60m (Prelims): Josh Atkinson advanced to the finals in the 60m dash after winning heat four in 6.92. Brother George just missed out on a spot in the finals as he finished third in heat one in 6.91.
200m (Prelims): The Atkinson brothers both qualified for the 200m dash finals as George qualified fifth in 21.74, while Josh qualified sixth in 21.68. George won heat two, while Josh finished second in heat one.
400m (Prelims): Reigning 400m champion Patrick Feeney qualified second for the 400m finals after winning heat three in 47.43. Brendan Dougherty also qualified after finishing second in heat two in 48.11.
500m (Prelims): Freshman standout Chris Giesting won heat won to qualify third in the 500m run. Giesting went 1:01.42 to edge the second-place competitor by .25 seconds.
800m (Prelims): Senior Randall Babb led an Irish contingent of two to place in the top four in the 800m. Babb qualified first for the finals in 1:53.49. Suriano took fourth in 1:54.16.
1,000m (Prelims): Seniors Johnathan Shawel and Jordan Carlson qualified fifth and seventh, respectively, for the 1,000m finals. Shawel finished in 2:29.96, while Carlson ran 2:26.02.
Mile (Prelims): A pair of Irish standouts qualified for the mile finals. Jeremy Rae took second in 4:11.82, while J.P. Malette placed fifth in 4:11.68.
Distance Medley Relay: The team of Kevin Byrne, Mitch Lorenz, Jack Favorite and DJ Thornton took fourth in the distance medley relay in a time of 10:00.58.
60m Hurdles (Prelims): Sophomore Jarrod Buchanon was the lone Irish competitor to qualify for the 60m hurdles finals as he finished third in heat three (8.13) to qualify eighth.
Long Jump: Keith Mesidor was the lone Irish long jumper to score points, placing sixth with a leap of 6.96m (22-10.00 ft).
Weight Throw: Sophomore Jordan Stumph (18.30m, 60-00.50) and junior Anthony Thomas (18.21m, 59-09.00) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw.
Heptathlon: The Notre Dame trio of Ted Glasnow (7.39), Peter Sullivan (7.69) and Dean Odegard (7.81) got off to a tough start in the 60m dash, finishing seventh, ninth and tenth, respectively. However, Sullivan rebounded to place second in the long and high jumps, with leaps of 6.78m (22-03.00 ft) and 1.96m (6-05.00 ft), respectively. Glasnow tied for fifth in the long jump (6.45m, 21-02.00 ft), finished fifth in the shot put (12.91m, 42-06.75 ft) and tied for fourth in the high jump (1.93m, 6-04.00 ft).
Through four events, Glasnow is in fifth (2,874 points), while Sullivan is seventh (2,702 points) and Odegard in 10th (2,452 points).
Women’s Results
400m (Prelims): Sophomore Michelle Brown and senior Natalie Geiger qualified sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400m dash. Brown (55.90) won heat six, while Geiger (55.71) finished second in heat two.
500m (Prelims): Sophomore Megan Yanik just slipped into the finals of the 500m run, placing eighth in 1:15.42. She finished second in heat one.
800m (Prelims): Sophomore McKinzie Schulz qualified fourth in the 800m run in 2:14.06.
1,000m (Prelims): Freshman Emily Frydrych dominated the field in the 800m prelims, taking first in 2:50.89. The time was over two seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
Mile (Prelims): A trio of Irish performers qualified for the finals of the mile as Kelly Curran (2nd, 4:52.56), Alexa Aragon (6th, 4:54.04) and Meg Ryan (9th, 4:51.07) all finished in the top ten.
5,000m: Senior Rachel Velarde was the lone Irish runner to score points in the 5,000m run. She crossed the line in seventh place in 16:50.49.
60m Hurdles (Prelims): Freshman Kaila Barber and junior Nevada Sorenson qualified second and fourth, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Barber hurdled to a time of 8.47, with Sorenson following behind in 8.55.
Distance Medley Relay: The Irish team of Rebecca Tracy, Jade Barber, Allison Schroeder and Kelly Curran took fourth in 11:28.87.
Pole Vault: Sophomore Kelly Burke took fourth place in the pole vault with a vault of 3.75m (12-03.50 ft).
Long Jump: Freshman Kaila Barber took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.87m, while Buttinger took seventh in 5.72m.
Pentathlon: Buttinger earned her second all-BIG EAST citation in the pentathlon, finishing in second place with 4,008 points. The Waterloo, Ontario native won the shot put (12.01m), finished second in the high jump (1.70m) and 800m run (2:17.7) and placed third in the long jump (5.72m) and 60m hurdles (9.19).
Freshman Carly Loeffel turned in a strong showing, placing sixth at her first BIG EAST meet. Loeffel finished third in the high jump (1.70m), fifth in the shot put (10.47m) and fourth in the long jump (5.44m) to propel her to sixth.
