NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads had a successful end to their first weekend of outdoor competition as three student-athletes earned first-place finishes during meets at Stanford and Arizona State.
At the Arizona State Invitational, Joanna Schultz won the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 58.13, Jack Howard clocked in at 1:49.52 to win the men’s 800 meters and Kevin Schipper won the men’s pole vault competition with a height of 5.10m (16-08 3/4). The Irish also recorded seven top-five finishes to go along with their first-place wins.
Notre Dame will travel to several meets next weekend, including the Arizona Multi-Event, the Florida Relays, the Purdue Invitational and the Auburn Tiger Track Classic.
Arizona State Invitational Results
Women’s 200m: Nevada Sorenson finished 23rd with a time of 25.53. Texas A&M’s Jessica Beard was the top sprinter in 23.31.
Women’s 800m: Kelly Langhans finished third in 2:09.06, just behind UC-Riverside’s Brenda Martinez in first at 2:04.76 and Andrea Parker, unattached, in second at 2:08.73.
Women’s 100m Hurdles: Nevada Sorenson clocked in at 14.20 to finish sixth, just ahead of Kali Watkins in seventh at 14.26. Arizona State’s Jasmine Chaney won the event in 13.50.
Women’s 400m Hurdles: Joanna Schultz was the top hurdler with a time of 58.13, edging Texas A&M’s Donique Fleming in second at 59.47. Kali Watkins finished 17th in 1:07.43.
Women’s Shot Put: Jaclyn Espinoza finished fourth at 14.24m (46-08 3/4), followed by Rudy Atang in fifth at 14.20m (46-07 1/4). Anna Jelmini, competing unattached, won the event at 16.41m (53-10 1/4).
Women’s Discus; Jaclyn Espinoza was the top collegiate competitor, finishing fourth at 47.70m (156-06). Anna Jelmini recorded the top throw of 55.13m (180-10).
Women’s Javelin: Elise Knutzen finished 10th with a toss of 41.74m (136-11).
Men’s 800m: Jack Howard won the event in 1:49.52. Blake Choplin finished fourth in 1:50.40, Cameron Eckert was seventh in 1:51.29 and Jim Notwell finished 115th in 1:53.22.
Men’s 4x400m Relay: The Irish team of Jack Howard, Blake Choplin, Jim Notwell and Cameron Eckert finished 11th in 3:19.79. Texas A&M was the top team in 3:06.15.
Men’s Pole Vault: Kevin Schipper was the top vaulter with a mark of 5.10m (16-08 3/4). Matt Schipper finished seventh at 4.90m (16-00 3/4).
Men’s Long Jump: Eric Quick finished third at 7.48m (24-06 1/2), just behind Texas A&M’s Tyron Stewart in first at 7.82m (25-08).
Men’s Shot Put: Denes Veres advanced to the finals, finishing fifth at 17.26m (56-07 1/2). John Belcher finished 12th at 16.08m (52-09 1/4), Andrew Hills finished 14th at 15.39m (50-06) and Anthony Thomas was 17th at 14.47m (47-05 3/4).
Men’s Discus: Anthony Thomas finished 17th at 46.36m (152-01).
Stanford Invitational Results
Men’s 800m: Kevin Labus finished 12th at 1:51.53, followed by Daniel Clark in 14th at 1:51.67. Stanford’s Dylan Ferris won the event in 1:48.72.
Women’s 800m: Rebecca Tracy finished 18th in 2:10.32, Abby Higgins was 26th in 2:11.35 and Marissa Treece finished 29th in 2:13.45. Dianne Cummins, running unattached, won the event in 2:05.00.
