Luis Haddock Continues Hot Play In Harvard Fall Invitational

Sept. 29, 2002

BOSTON – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team completed a stretch of three tournaments in three weeks by participating in singles matches against Harvard and doubles contests vs. Alabama on the final day of the Harvard Fall Invitational on Sunday. Tri-captain Luis Haddock (Caguas, Puerto Rico) led the way for the Irish with a pair of victories and improved to 3-0 this fall against opponents ranked in the national top 75. Five of the other six singles matches played by Notre Dame players on Sunday were decided by match tiebreakers played instead of third sets, with the Irish losing each of them.

Haddock, who did not compete on Saturday, topped the Crimson’s 47th-ranked Jonathan Chu 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) in singles action. Chu joined #51 Aleksey Zharinov of Minnesota and #72 Scott Mayer of Purdue as ranked players who have fallen victim to Haddock this fall. The win was the eighth in his career over a ranked player and Chu marks the highest-ranked foe to lose to Haddock. The Irish junior is 8-2 in singles action this fall and improved to 29-6 in fall singles play in his career.

Later in the day, Haddock teamed with classmate and fellow Puerto Rican Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) for an 8-5 victory over Stephen Mitchell and Geoff Hiscox of Alabama. Haddock improved to 7-2 in doubles this fall.

Over the weekend, Haddock was 3-2 overall, including 2-1 in doubles. Sophomore Peter Graham (Luxembourg) also played well, going 2-1, including a win in his only singles match to improve to 5-2 this fall. Freshman Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton, N.Y.) won two of his three doubles matches and is now 4-1 in collegiate doubles action, while classmate Sergey Leonyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) saw his first action in college tennis, picking up his first career wins in both singles and doubles.

Notre Dame will have nearly four weeks off before hitting the courts again for the Omni Hotels Midwest Championships from Oct. 24-29 in Madison, Wis.
