Men's Golf Returns To Action At 2002 Stonebridge Invitational

McKinney, Texas – The Notre Dame men’s golf team closes out the fall schedule this week with a pair of tournaments. On Mon.-Tues., Oct. 21-22, the Irish travel to McKinney, Texas to participate in the 2002 Stonebridge Invitational. The tournament will be held at the par 72, 7,247-yard Dye Course at Stonebridge. Southern Methodist University hosts the tournament and will be looking for their third consecutive team title.

The Teams: The 14-team field includes: Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Baylor, Iowa State, Kent State, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, Notre Dame, Southeast Louisiana, SMU, SMU JV team, Texas-Arlington, Texas Tech and Western Kentucky.

Dates and Times: The tournament will begin on Monday, Oct. 21 with an 8:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. The second round of the tournament will start at approximately 1:00 p.m. (CDT). On Tuesday, Oct. 22, the final round will start at 8:00 a.m. with scheduled tee times at holes one and 10.

Irish Lineup: Coach John Jasinski’s lineup will consist of four freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. Making the trip will be Scott Gustafson (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), Eric Deutsch (Fr., Rochester, Minn.), Tommy Balderston (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.), Mark Baldwin (Fr., Laconia, N.H.), Ryan Marshall (So., Marco Island, Fla.) and Brandon Lunke (Sr., San Antonio, Tex.).

Last Tournament: The Irish competed in the Fresno-Lexus Invitational on Oct. 10-11 at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif. Notre Dame turned in its best scores of the season while finishing tied for ninth in the 18-team field. The Irish fired rounds of 288-294-303 on the way to a 21-over par 885. Lunke led the Irish with a career-best performance as he tied for fifth with a three-under par 213 (69-71-73). Gustafson tied for 17th with his best score of the season as he shot a three-over par 219 (69-74-76). Deutsch tied for 38th with a 224 (74-74-76), Balderston tied for 76th with a 233 (76-75-82) and Baldwin rounded out the lineup with a 234 (76-80-78) to tie for 79th.

Irish Leaders: Lunke leads the Irish with a 71.00 average in the lone tournament he played in this season. Gustafson is second with a 74.33 mark. Deutsch is third overall with a 75.33, followed by Baldwin (78.00) and Balderston (78.89). Marshall has not played yet this season but as a freshman appeared in nine tournaments with a 76.22 average.

Next For The Irish: The Notre Dame men’s golf team will close out the fall schedule from Oct. 25-27 when they travel to Stanford to play in The Nelson Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days with 18 holes scheduled each day at the Stanford University Golf Course.
