Senior outside hitter Kristen Dealy knows what it takes to lead by example on and off the court for her younger teammates. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native was one of two seniors on the squad for Notre Dame this season. During the 2011 campaign, Dealy became just the eighth player in program history to record 1,000 career digs and 1,000 career kills. Dealy recently sat down with Matt Lang of UND.com to tell us more about herself and career at Notre Dame.
What is your major and why did you choose it?
My major is American Studies, along with Film, Television & Theater. I choose American Studies mainly because I want to go to law school after graduation.
What are your plans after graduation?
I hope to attend law school. I might take a year off to work or possibly play volleyball abroad.
What do you think is the most unique part of attending Notre Dame?
I would say the community. Everyone who is on campus is so happy to be here, including the ushers and all of the employees. It’s really a positive atmosphere.
Being one of two seniors on the team, how did you help with the maturation of the younger players?
I tried to help them with anything I can, and guide them when necessary. Sometimes we need to be a little hard on them, but we try to lead by example and give them the support they need.
Outside of Purcell Pavilion, where was your favorite place to play and why?
Definitely Hawaii. Their fans are just so dedicated and they had the biggest crowd. They were all respectful and so welcoming to us. You could tell they loved volleyball and everyone who participated.
If you could trade places with Coach (Debbie) Brown for a day, what would you do?
I would take the team on another really cool and fun trip!
What do you consider to be the best place to study on campus?
Probably on one of the top floors of Hesburgh Library.
How long have you been playing volleyball, and did you play any other sports growing up?
I started playing volleyball when I was freshman in high school. I played almost every sport up until my sophomore year in high school, including baseball.
Do you have a pregame ritual?
I don’t personally have a pregame ritual. I guess I’m not very superstitious. As for the team, we generally eat together before the game.
What do you think is the best part of playing at Notre Dame?
I would say the community aspect, the fans, and the team. I feel like I’m a part of a big family here, and no matter what they support you. It’s not just a sport; it’s about being around you and enjoying your success.
What do you miss most about being away from home?
I miss my family and friends and spending time with them. I also miss the California beaches.
Who was your role model as a kid?
My mom. Nobody has ever said a bad thing about her, and she’s a really good person. She’s definitely someone you would want to be like.
Do you have any siblings?
I have an older sister, Caitlin, who is 23, and a younger brother, Nick who is 19.
What is your favorite sports-related movie?
“Remember the Titans”
Which dining hall do you prefer – North or South?
South
What is your favorite professional team?
I don’t really watch sports that often, so I can’t claim a favorite.
What song is atop of your iPod playlist right now?
“Favorite Color” by Tokyo Police Club
What is your favorite cartoon character?
I’m actually not a huge fan of cartoons, but if I had to choose, Doug would probably be my choice.
Who is the most famous person you have met?
Oprah. She doesn’t live too far from me in California.
