AS A JUNIOR (2015-16): swam primarily mid-distance freestyle and butterfly in third season with the Irish, finishing the year at ACC Championship meet … at ACCs, swam 500 free in 4:29.74 and 200 free in 1:38.89 …advanced to “C” final of 200 fly on strength of 1:49.07 prelim time, finishing 22nd overall (1:49.48) … began the year swimming sparingly at meets … contributed to two first-place finishes at the Dennis Stark Relays, swimming with the 800 free relay (1:44.62 split) and 1500 free relay (5:13.70 split) … continued his success against Michigan State individually, earning fifth in the 1000 free (9:37.42), and a third place finish in the 500 free (4:41.82) … swam to sixth place with the 400 free relay (48.03 split) against Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh, exhibitioning in the 1650 free (16:49.86) … finished 11th in the 500 free at the Purdue Invitational (4:30.25) after touching the wall in 4:36.15 in the prelims … best finish came in the 1650 free, clocking in at 16:00.34, good for 10th place … finished 17th overall in the 200 free (1:40.78 finals, 1:43.95 prelims) and 25th in the 200 fly (1:50.96 finals, 2:05.78 prelims) … took home three seventh-place finishes at Virginia, in the 500 free (4:41.19), the 200 fly (1:57.16), and the 1000 free (9:49.44) … placed sixth in both the 200 free (1:44.52) and 200 fly (1:55.92) against Northwestern, and a 5th place mark in the 500 free (4:40.94) and 400 free relay (48.15 split) … finished regular season at Shamrock Invite, touching in seventh with 400 free relay (47.00 split) … also clocked in at 4:41.21 in 500 free, 1:46.97 in 200 free and 1:57.08 in 200 fly … earned a monogram.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2014-15): Developed into a distance freestyle for the Irish, improving upon freshman year results … began the year at Dennis Stark Relays, swimming lead leg of the 800 free relay (1:45.60 split) that finished third (7:03.01) … also led in the 2×500 free relay that won (4:43.88 split, 9:34.17) … against Purdue, came in sixth in the 1,000 free (9:41.34) and took seventh in the 500 free (4:41.78) … swam lead leg on the C-team of the 400 free relay, clocking a 49.01 split for the fifth-place team (3:14.42) … versus Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, touched the wall sixth in the 1650 free (16:09.56) and finished in 4:38.54 in the 500 free … swam third leg on the D-team of the 200 medley relay, logging a 22.98 split … finished the 200 fly in 1:58.54 before swimming third on the C-team of the 400 free relay ( 48.46 split, 3:11.09) … at Michigan State, came in second in the 500 free (4:40.18) … at Hawkeye Invitational, tied for seventh in the 500 free (4:29.38) after touching the wall in 4:28.92 in the morning … finished 19th in 200 free (1:38.71) with a prelim time of 1:40.13 … swam second on the B-team of the 800 free relay, logging a 1:43.27 split and finishing seventh (6:46.51) … also came in seventh in the 1650 free (15:38.98) and swam second on the C-team of the 400 free relay that finished 10th (46.10 split, 3:06.68) … at Michigan, swam to ninth place in the 1650 free (16:27.39) and sixth in the 500 free (4:38.77) … at Wisconsin, took 10th in the 1000 free (9:50.18) and touched the wall eighth in the 500 free (4:42.15) … in the Shamrock Invitational, finished 13th in the 500 free (4:42.20) and was 15th in the 200 free (1:46.09) … swam second on the 800 free relay B-team (1:45.23, 6:55.17) that came in sixth … touched the wall in 10th place in the 1650 free (16:19.54) … against Cleveland State, took third in the 500 free (4:39.95) … at ACC Championships, just missed qualifying for the evening finals in 500 free (4:26.79) … touched the wall in 1:38.92 in 200 free, later swimming 1:39.47 in time trials … finished 29th in the 1650 free with a time of 15:44.56 … earned a monogram.
AS A FRESHMAN (2013-14): Competed in a season-high four events at the Shamrock Invitational, placing first in both the 500 free (4:30.39) and 1650 free (15:40.81), sixth in the 200 free (1:41.49) and 10th in the 200 fly (1:53.89) … had nearly as busy a day at the Hawkeye Invitational, swimming to a 21st-place finish in the 200 free (1:41.17), 20th in the 100 back (52.60) and 17th in the 200 fly (1:52.51).
PREP AND PERSONAL: Four-year letterwinner in swimming, with two years split between Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School and Cherry Hill High School … named to the all-catholic and all-district first teams in the 200 and 500 free as both a junior and senior at Saint Joseph’s Prep … state champion and earned All-America honors in the 200 and 500 free as a sophomore at Cherry Hill High … won first career state title in the 500 free, and was an All-America consideration during freshman season … participated in the 2012 United States Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. … swam with the Jersey Wahoos club team … member of the U.S. Junior National Team squad that competed against the Itoman Swimming School in a dual competition in Osaka, Japan in 2011 … son of Joe and Kathy Petrone … has two sisters, Kathleen and Madelyn … father, Joe, played basketball at Drexel University … enrolled in the Mendoza College of Business, majoring in Management Consulting with a minor in Constitutional Studies.
