STANFORD, Calif. — A pair of Irish sprinters posted the nation’s top times in the 400 meters on Friday as the University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track & field teams completed Day One of competition at the Stanford Invitational.
Junior Margaret Bamgbose and senior Chris Giesting each won their respective 400-meter races on Friday, posting what would be the top times in the country based on times entering the day, according to TFRRS.com. Bamgbose finished in 52.38, while Giesting finished just four-tenths of a second off his own school record in 45.93.
Junior Molly Seidel returned to the track for the first time since earning All-America scrolls in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships and posted a time of 15:52.41, good enough to win her section and take 15th overall. Based on times entering the day, Seidel’s mark would be good for sixth in the collegiate ranks.
Jade Barber finished first in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, notching a time of 13.23 to qualify for Saturday’s finals. Emily Morris finished third in the invitational section of the shot put with a toss of 15.40 meters.
On the men’s side, Eric Ways also made an impressive showing in the 400 meters, finishing fifth in 47.31. Jacob Dumford (3:49.69) and Chris Marco (3:51.57) finished first and second in their section of the 1,500 meters. In the 5,000 meters, junior Michael Clevenger finished eighth in section two (13:56.24). In the evening’s final race, senior Jake Kildoo finished 19th in Section 2 of the 10,000 meters with a personal best time of 29:18.30.
Dominick Padovano finished fourth in the invitational section of the discus throw with a personal best of 54.42 meters.
Action concludes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. PDT with field events, with running events beginning at 9:52 a.m. PDT.
