NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams kicked off their 1999-2000 seasons with dominating performances Friday night at the Notre Dame Relays in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
In the 35th annual men’s meet, the Irish won all but one of the 13 events en route to a first place team score of 228 in the seven-team meet. The Irish were followed by Illinois-Chicago, Wabash College, Valparaiso, Xavier, Butler and Marquette. Wabash was the only school other than Notre Dame to win an event, posting a first-place time of 3:46.70 in the 400-yard individual medley relay. The Irish also recorded a new meet record time of 3:32.73 in the 400-yard medley relay.
In the 16th annual women’s meet, Notre Dame captured 10 of the 13 event titles and set one of three new meet records with a mark of 1:48.12 in the 200 medley relay. Runner-up Illinois State won the other three events including the 500 crescendo and the 400 freestyle relays, which they won in meet record time, and the 400 butterfly relay. The Irish, who won the meet with a team score of 222, were followed by Illinois State, Butler, Xavier and Illinois-Chicago, who tied for fourth, Valparaiso, Marquette and St. Mary’s.
