Irish Defeat Hokies on Senior Day

NOTRE DAME, Ind.  —  Aubrey Hamilton helped the Irish to their 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-20) victory on Senior Day over Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon with a double-double in 15 kills and 11 digs.

Zoe Nunez dished out 33 assists in the matchup. Phyona Schrader recorded 11 kills while hitting .455, and teammate Lindsey Miller hit .538 on seven kills. Caroline Meuth added to the Irish totals with eight kills.

Nancy Kane recorded two service aces while Hattie Monson recorded one.

Monson also led the Irish with 21 digs while Hamilton recorded 11 and Schrader tallied nine.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

Notre Dame opened immediately taking a 10-6 lead with kills from Meuth, Miller, Hamilton, Schrader and Lauren Wenzel.

A 4-0 run from the Irish would push their lead 15-9. Kills from Hamilton and Schrader would keep the Irish in a comfortable lead. An ace from Hattie Monson gave Notre Dame the set 25-14.

Second Set

The opening of the second set would be a lot of back and forth play until a kill from Meuth gave the Irish a 10-7 lead.

The Hokies cut the Irish lead coming within one, until a kill from Hamilton kept the Irish in lead, 16-14. The Irish would continue their lead as kills from Schrader, Meuth and Hamilton finished out the set 25-22.

Third Set

Kills from Meuth and Hamilton would immediately put the Irish up 5-4. The two teams traded points for most of the set, keeping within one of each other until a kill from Meuth gave the Irish the lead at 16-15.

The next eight points would give the Irish the final stanza with an ace from Nancy Kane, and kills from Hamilton and Wenzel. The Irish took the final set 25-20.

  • The Irish will travel to Florida State and Louisville for their final two regular season matchups.
