CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Irish men’s team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule in fine fashion on Sunday, posting a record of 5-0 at the Miller Invitational on the campus of UNC.
With the five victories this weekend, the men’s team closes out the regular season with a record of 36-2.
Notre Dame picked up three top-15 victories on the day, as it defeated No. 5 Penn State (19-8), No. 10 Duke (18-9) and No. 14 Johns Hopkins (18-9) to go along with wins over Boston College (14-13) and Brandeis (25-2).
The first bout of the day proved to be the toughest for the Irish, as the sabre team produced the heroics for the victory. Trailing 1-4, the Irish won the final four matchups to pull out a 5-4 win in the weapon and help Notre Dame edge past Boston College by a score of 14-13.
The Fighting Irish were led by freshman Ahmed Hesham, who posted a record of 8-1 in sabre, the best mark of any ND fencer on the day. James Sennewald also performed admirably in epee, finishing 8-2 on Sunday.
The men’s and women’s squads will open postseason competition in two weeks back in the Tar Heel State with the ACC Championships in Chapel Hill on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23.
