Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Junior Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) scored five goals and dished off two assists, tying his career-highs for goals and points in a game, to lead the 15th-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team to a 13-4 victory over Ohio State in a Great Western Lacrosse League matchup. With the win, the Irish snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the GWLL, while the Buckeyes are now 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Notre Dame had five different goal scorers in the contest to lead the balanced attack, while six players had one or more assists in the game. Senior Stedman Oakey (Charlottesville, Va.) led the Irish with three assists in the contest.

The victory avenges for Notre Dame a 5-4 loss to Ohio State last year. The Irish, who now lead the series 16-7, have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the contest before the Buckeyes got on the scoreboard with the Irish scoring twice in the first 15-minute stanza. Ohio State dictated a slower tempo early on, but Notre Dame finally got on the board when Chris Young (Camillus, N.Y.) scored the first of his two goals off a Glatzel feed with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter. Glatzel tallied his first score of the game 16 seconds later off a David Ulrich as the Irish scored twice in the first period.

Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.) opened up the second quarter with the first of his three goals at 14:25 of a John Flandina (West Islip, N.Y.) feed. Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.), who tallied twice in the game, gave the Irish a 4-0 lead, before goals by Glatzel and Young pushed the lead to 6-0 with 5:44 remaining before the break.

Ohio State finally got on the scoreboard with Pat Meyers’ goal with 40 seconds left before the intermission, but Glatzel’s third goal of the game with eight second remaining off of a Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) feed gave the Irish a 7-1 lead at the break.

Bishko pushed the lead to 8-1 1:08 into the third quarter, before the Buckeyes responded with their only serious run of the game scoring three unanswered goals on scores by Mike Norton, Anthony Kelly and Kevin Stephan that pulled the Buckeyes to within 8-4 with 5:41 remaining in the third quarter.

Bishko also scored the final goal of the third period to stop the Buckeye run that began a streak of five unanswered goals for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame outscored the Buckeyes 4-0 in the final stanza on two goals by Glatzel and scores by Harvey and David Ulrich.

Irish goalkeeper Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) went the distance in goal and made eight stops on 21 Buckeye shots. Mike Abeles had 11 stops on 38 Notre Dame shots as he played all 60 minutes of the contest.

Notre Dame returns to action next Saturday, April 8 when the Irish travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to face GWLL foe Butler at 2:00 p.m.
