Notre Dame vs. Boston College
February 3, 2001 Conte Forum, Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Muffet McGraw-Notre Dame Head Coach:
“I was really pleased with our game offensively today. I thought we did a lot of great things today, in particularly Ruth Riley really had a great game. We were trying to go inside as much as we could and take advantage of the mismatches we had in there. I thought she played well.”
“I thought we did a good job taking care of the basketball. We had a season low of turnovers of nine and that is really something we need to improve on. We didn’t quit shoot the ball as well as we usually do but I think that is because Boston College played great defense.”
“I thought (Nicole) Conway had a great game. We were really on her and she made some tough shots down the stretch and to really keep things going for them. I just really thought she was the player of the game for them. She really, really played well.”
“We really have a good inside, outside game. I think we are tough to defend because you have to come out to the three-point line and guard us. And you have to guard us in the post. You don’t want to leave Ruth (Riley) one on one in the block because I don’t think that is a good way to guard her. So I think you have to think about double teaming her.”
Cathy Inglese-Boston College Head Coach
“Obvious with Ruth (Riley) inside, it is one on one she scores 50 points. You really have to do some things when you double down, you hedge down, when you do that, they have some really nice scores and penetrated from the perimeter. That is what makes them number one. They have a lot of weapon and a lot of things you have to top to be successful. I think we did that much of the game. But when you don’t they take advantage of that.”
“I was really happy with the game. We played the number one team in the country and at one point I turned to my staff and said we have three freshman out there.”
On the freshman
“They are doing a nice job. They are doing what they can. I was really pleased with Amber (Jacobs) and Janelle (McManus) not just offensive wise by defensive wise and obviously there are a few things we can do a little bit better to be successful. But overall there enthusiasm, they didn’t give up the whole game. They are ready to work hard. That all I really can ask from them at this time of the year.”
